Did you know that blankets were REALLY important to Native Americans?
They were completely handmade and used as a way to stay warm during the colder months. They were also used as decorations around their homes, for wearing, sitting upon or carrying items during travel.
But here’s the interesting thing... a lot of tribes like the Navajos also believed that weaving itself was a quiet an act of faith - a link to the past.
The Navajo weavers added a “spirit trail” or “weaver’s pathway" which was a line running off the edge of the piece that allowed the spirit of the weaver to escape
so that she could go on to another.
This is one of the many reasons why these blankets were often lovingly cared for by members of the household and passed down from one generation to the next.
